The Lone Stump

The other day I saw a plant sitting in someones window that had been overly trimmed. I thought it looked a lot like a mythical creature that had its head loped off. As a result, I started moving my hands in the air unconsciously while imagining it. I quickly noticed and stopped, thinking that maybe I should actually draw it instead of embarrass myself in public. So I did. I even thought of a story for it as well.

These guys are born from the stumps of logged and discard tree trunks. When they grow up they look for the place from where their tree once stood, like a ghost trying to find its way back home. Unfortunately, the places from which they came have usually been clear-cut and bulldozed to make space for housing developments or some fancy new mall. Without a way back, they can sometimes wonder aimlessly for there entire life. All is not lost though, Often they will provide a place for animals to nest within there semi-hollow bodies(like a mobile home) as well as form symbiotic relationships with some of the plant life around them.

They also make a honking noise reminiscent of a didgeridoo.

I'm satisfied with the result, but I'm thinking of re-coloring it using textures at some point.

  2. Yeeeaaahh, I also noticed that after I finished it. Decided it was a good thing and just rolled with it. Unlike drawing people, I wish I could draw creatures all willy nilly but usually I need a pretty solid idea of what I want it to look like ahead of time.
